ANKENY — The William Penn cross country team found themselves in Ankeny for the second week in a row as they participated in yet another Grand View Invitational Friday.
After placing fifth last week, the men's team took a step backwards on Friday, finishing seventh out of eight teams with 200 total points in the 8K competition.
Iowa Central CC took the top spot, with six of their runners taking top-10 spots, including Kelvin Bungei, who set the pace with a time of 26:17.5. The top finishers for the William Penn men were Ruben Perez-Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio, Texas) and Jonah Heckenberg (Fr., Stockton, Iowa), who finished within a second of each other at 46th and 47th. Perez-Rodriguez crossed in a time of 29:36.1, while Heckenberg finished at 29:37.0.
Isaac Knockel (Fr., New Sharon, Iowa) (30:11.3), Vernon Trozzi (So., Hesperia, Calif.) (30:32.4), and William DeJesus (So., Homestead, Fla.) were other notable varsity finishers.
The women fared better in their race, taking the fourth spot out of six teams on Friday, just edging out fifth place Northern Iowa Area CC with 98 points.
Iowa Central CC once again took the top spot with five of the top six places. Eleonora Curtabbi of ICCC led the pack with a time of 18:47.7 in the 5K race.
Zena Cohuo (Jr., Carrollton, Texas) led the women's team once again, earning herself another top-10 finish as she took ninth with a time of 21:07.9.
Michaela Kmiec (So., Centerville, Texas) also found her way into the top 10 this week. She took the 10th position with a time of 21:21.5. Her time represented an improvement of over 40 seconds from last week's mark.
Unfortunately, there was a sizable gap from WPU's top-10 finishers and the next Statesmen runner. Talaysia Douver (Jr., Lakewood, Calif.) was the next closest finisher in 27th place (23:17.7), and Madison Udy (Jr., American Falls, Idaho) took 34th (24:12.6).
What's Next: The Statesmen will have next week off before traveling to Lamoni for the Graceland Invitational on Sept. 26th.
