WPU women's soccer

William Penn had its two-game winning streak snapped

OSKALOOSA — The Statesmen women’s soccer team came up short in its first battle of the year against a ranked foe, losing 5-0 to No. 12 Columbia in non-conference play Saturday.

William Penn (2-2), which was outshot 20-9, played even with the Cougars (2-1) in the early going. Unfortunately, the visitors finally broke through in the 12th minute for the first goal of the game.

Another CC tally was added in the 36th minute as the navy and gold entered halftime down 2-0.

Despite losing the shots battle by just two at 8-6 in the latter period, WPU was unable to make up any ground as Columbia had a trio of goals over the span of six minutes to put the game out of reach.

Taylor Witthauer (So., Vancouver, Wash., Nursing) paced the Statesmen with three shots, while Kaitlin Falaney (Jr., Ottawa, Ill., Sports Management) added two more attempts. Katja Bierman (So., Alkmaar, The Netherlands, Digital Communication) recorded 11 saves between the pipes in the setback.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Columbia, Mo. next Tuesday to face Stephens in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
