Braden Steel

North Mahaska sophomore Braden Steel soars as he scores two of his game-high 26 points against Melcher-Dallas Tuesday in an 83-42 district quarterfinal win.

NEW SHARON — The Class 1A boy’s district basketball game between the North Mahaska Warhawks and the Melcher-Dallas Saints scheduled for Monday night was postponed due to the extreme cold weather. It was agreed on by the schools to play at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the NM girl’s regional tournament game.

Apparently the Warhawks left their engines running Monday night to keep them from freezing up as they hit the court Tuesday at full speed. It was soon established that the Saints would not be able to handle the two sophomore bigs of North Mahaska. The tandem of Nash Smith and Braden Steel terrorized M-D by scoring 11 of the 14 points in an opening 14-0 Warhawk run and the rout was underway.

North Mahaska built a 25–5 lead after one quarter of play as Smith rained in a pair of threes and Addy Bollman added another. Steel canned four baskets and Smith knocked down three duces.

The Warhawks were still sizzling in the second period as Steel drained seven baskets and a pair of free throws and Lane Harmon popped in a three and a breakaway layup. NM was in total control at the break with a 48-16 lead.

It didn’t take long for the 35-point mercy rule to be in effect as a fast break bucket by Harmon and a three ball by Bollman had the running clock in operation at the 6:59 mark of quarter number three. North Mahaska had a 68-32 lead going into the final frame and the reserves put the finishing touches on an 83-42 victory.

“We got the ball out and moved very well,” Warhawk coach Seth Streebin said. “We shared the ball well and we had many assists for easy baskets. We knew that we could work the inside and our perimeter kids did a great job of looking inside.”

Steel led a quintet of Warhawks in double digits with 26 points while Smith and Bollman each chipped in with 12 points and Harmon and Dylan Klinker each put down 10 points. Smith completed a double-double with 12 rebounds and Blake Readshaw led the team in steals with six and assists with six.

The 16-4 Warhawks go on the road Thursday night to tangle with SICL foe Keota at Keota.
