NEW SHARON — The North Mahaska Warhawks hosted the Braves from Montezuma Saturday night with the Class 1A District 8 title on the line. The Warhawks owned two previous wins over the Braves, so this would be that feared third time around.
There was no fear in the Warhawk camp as the red and white team struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 6-0 win behind the no-hit pitching for six innings by Blake Readshaw. NM Coach Kevin Kelderman chose to lift Readshaw after six innings as his pitch count was well over 100. Jayden Stiel worked the seventh inning and allowed the lone Montezuma hit, a single by Gavin Strong.
In that bottom of the first inning, Readshaw ripped a double in the left-center gap and Dylan Klinker drove him home by clubbing a triple down the right field line. Klinker then scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 NM lead.
Two more North Mahaska runs went up in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Terpstra and Nash Smith led off with singles and a wild pitch moved the runners up. A balk scored Terpstra and Smith would score on an error.
The final two Warhawk runs were scored in the bottom of the fifth. Readshaw rapped a bad hop double past the third baseman and Klinker drew a base on balls. A double by Terpstra chased both runners home.
Readshaw led the Warhawks on the hill and at the dish with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Terpstra added a double and a single with two RBI and Klinker had an RBI triple.
“We wanted to jump on them early,” Kelderman said. “The first inning was huge for us. Readsshaw just pitched a great game and we had excellent defense behind him. We hit the ball hard, ran the bases well and took the opportunities we were given.”
The Warhawks will take a 22-5 record into the substate final at Marshalltown Tuesday night against the Pirates of Alburnett.
