The Iowa PGA Section announced that Jeff Smith, head professional at Harvest Point Golf Course, is the recipient of the first President’s Plaque Award.

“The award in a new addition this year to the gallery of awards presented by the Iowa PGA, that being so, we are honored to present the first one to Jeff,” said Troy Christensen, Executive Director of the Iowa Section of the PGA, in a statement. “The honoree is chosen based on their extraordinary and exemplary contributions and schievemnets in the are of player development, contributions made to the success of the nominee’s facility, and growth of the game leadership commitment at the Section and National levels. Jeff has embodied all of these charateristics while managing Harvest Point Golf Course.

“He is also an active member of the Iowa Section PGA Board of Directors, along with the National PGA Board of Directors, as the District 8 Director. Jeff’s contributions to the Iowa PGA, National PGA and Harvest Point Golf Course are remarkable and numerous, we are grateful for all that he had done in his years of being a PGA member.”

Smith, who will be an observer during a singles match at the Ryder Cup in Wales this weekend, said he’s flattered to be the first recipient of the award.

“I’m pretty flattered and honored to be chosen by my peers to win thes inaugural award,” he said in a telephone interview. “This award represented a lot by just the service I have provided to our section and our members so I’ve always tried to give back to our Iowa PGA and try to be very charitable as much as we can and volunteer whenever I can.”

He has volunteered his services for such causes as the Danny Joe Memorial Tournament as well as Diamond Shelter for 10 years it was held at Edmundson Golf Course, where his family used to operate.

He’s on the GIVE (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere) Program and said the Patriot Day outing was very successful, having raised $700 at Harvest Point for injured veterans and their families.

“It’s a culmination of giving back and I’ve been very blessed with the business that I’ve had that I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in get away from my job to participate with charitable activities as well.”

Smith will be honored at the 2010 Iowa Section PGA Award luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort in Riverside.
