Class 4A Track

Oskaloosa sophomore Brooke VanHouweling, left, duels a Waukee runner during the closing stretch of the distance medley event at a Class 4A regional/district meet Friday at Waukee Stadium. VanHouweling couldn’t quite catch her at the finish line as the Indians finished third, just .006 of a second behind the runner-up Warriors. The team still qualified for this week’s state meet in Des Moines.

While the Oskaloosa girls track team didn’t succeed in sending a lot of events to this week’s state track meet, the Indians did record 10 season-best or personal best performances at Friday night’s Class 4A regional meet at Waukee Stadium.

The Indians will have the distance medley team of Kirsti Edwards, MaKena Veldhuizen, Whitney Newman and Brooke VanHouweling running on the blue oval at Drake Stadium this week. VanHouweling also will be competing in the 800 meters.

The distance medley quartet was edged by Waukee at the finish line after both teams ran identical 4:20.22 times. The Warriors, however, were awarded second place and the automatic spot by virtue of edging the Indians by — get this — .006 of a second.

Despite not automatically earning a spot in the state meet, Oskaloosa nonetheless qualified by having one of the 12 fastest times of the from the other regionals. The team also had its best time of the season by nearly 11 seconds.

VanHouweling also just missed placing second in the 800 as she ran 2:24.24 while Indianola’s Ellyn Cory was just a little bit faster at 2:24.20.

Oskaloosa coach Betsy Luck, who recently had her second child, said the sophomore is not making it easy on her.

“Brooke’s trying to give me a heart attack this season,” Luck said jokingly. “That was a season’s best by quite a bit. They ran great tonight. Great competition here. I talked to the girls about rising to the competition and running their best. I’m just really pleased with the girls and how they ran tonight.”

VanHouweling was disappointed about not catching the Waukee anchor runner at the line, but was confident the would make it to the state meet.

“It’s very frustrating. I didn’t think I was going to catch her,” she said. “You’ve got to really push it in the last 100 meters and I was going for it. I thought I did it, but I guess I didn’t. It’s awesome to run our best time of the season and our team did good. That’s not much at all. It must have been by a hair.”

The Oskaloosa boys failed to send anyone to the state meet as only the top four in each district earn spots in the field at state.

The top finishes were Nick Lobberecht’s fifth-place finish in the 110 high hurdles and the 4x100 foursome of Jake Osborn, Brad Vonk, Austin Lourens and Tim DeJong as they also came in fifth — one spot from making the state meet.
