OSKALOOSA — Rachel Brown enters her second year leading the Oskaloosa boys swimming program and will lose her lone state qualifier from a year ago but will also see her numbers jump from five to 12 this season.
“We have a lot of newcomers this year,” Brown said. “This can be seen as both a strength and a weakness for us. It is a weakness in a way because we have a few boys who are new to swimming and new to high school swimming, which is very different from YMCA swimming. This is also a strength for us because it means that we have so much room to grow! We also are able to fill up a line up better to earn more points at meets.”
Aaron Scholes, Aaron Wilson, Keygan Roberts and Payton Snyder all return to the team this winter and they will be joined by several newcomers including Landon Briggs, a senior that returns to the team after swimming his freshman and sophomore year. Oskaloosa will also welcome a good group of freshmen in Cooper Rupprecht, Jackson Phillips-Sisul and Oliver Smith.
Osky’s lone home meet is scheduled for Dec. 16 against Keokuk and Williamsburg. They will be excited to get back in front of their home fans after having to cancel their only home meet a year ago.
The increase in numbers will certainly help with the Indians’ scoring at meets with them being able to fill out more events and more relays. It should be a group that improves with every practice and meet in what will be a busy winter for Oskaloosa.
“We have a couple of weeks this season where we will be competing Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday,” Brown said. “Those weeks will take a lot of hard work and determination from the boys to make it through. They will have to be ready to put in the hard work on the days that we do practice those weeks to help us prepare for the meets. I am looking forward to seeing what these boys can do this season!”
