Braden Steel

North Mahaska's Braden Steel goes up for a layup in a game earlier this season.

NEW SHARON – Two boys’ teams were undefeated in South Iowa Cedar League play entering Friday’s contest. One would have to come up short. Keota held off a North Mahaska rally to win 51-50.

North Mahaska and Keota played toe-to-toe most of the game before the visiting Eagles pulled away with a six-point lead with 1:56 to play. NM senior Addy Bollman hit a jumper and sophomore Lane Harmon hit a trey to pull the game to a 49-48 lead by Keota.

Keota pulled the ball out playing ball control and North Mahaska fouled. However, Keota went just 2-for-6 at the line in the final 27 seconds. They were able to grab an offensive board on two of the possessions. North Mahaska set up the play they wanted as Bollman lined up a three-pointer from the right side but Keota’s Brady Duwa blocked the shot. Sophomore Braden Steel hit a layup with one second left but the Warhawks were a point short.

The loss was just the second of the season for NM. They lost a non-conference game at PCM in December.

“They are a good team probably tougher than PCM,” said North Mahaska coach Seth Streebin. “In the first half we did a better job getting to the ball inside.”

Steel and Bollman led the Warhawk scoring with 14 and 13 points respectively. Blake Readshaw added eight, Harmon seven and Nash Smith had five. Steel led the rebounding with 10.

Keota coach Dan Stout said the block was big.

“Brady Duwa played a great game,” said Stout. “That block was huge. It was a huge defensive stop. We were able to get a couple offensive rebounds when we missed the free throws and was able to control the ball.”

Carson Sprouse led Keota with 19 and Duwa had 17 points and seven rebounds.

North Mahaska, 7-2, plays at English Valleys on Tuesday and hosts Pelle Plaine Friday. Keota, 10-0, host HLV Tuesday before going to Montezuma Friday.
