Karmari Newman averaged 37 points last week

OSKALOOSA — Karmari Newman (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) was a scoring machine last weekend and his monumental efforts were recognized as he was named Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday.

Newman garnered his second career weekly laurel as he helped William Penn (5-0) claim a pair of wins in Indiana last weekend.

The senior’s week began with a career-high 39-point showing against Indiana-South Bend Friday. Hitting 14 of his 24 shots, Newman was 10-for-16 from three-point land, but none of those shots was bigger than his go-ahead trifecta with 11 seconds remaining. Newman added three rebounds and three assists to his point tally.

Less than 24 hours later, Newman accounted for another 35 points versus Bethel (Ind.). He was 12-for-18 from the field (9-for-14 3-PT) and narrowly missed a double-double with eight rebounds (two assists as well). For the proverbial cherry on top, the senior joined WPU’s 1,000-point club in the victory as well.

For the year, Newman is averaging 25.2 points on 46.7% overall shooting. He is 49.2% from the perimeter, 81.3% at the free-throw line, and is averaging 4.8 rebounds along with 14 assists and one block.

Newman has eclipsed double figures in all five games this season.

The award is the first for WPU this year.
