GRINNELL—The William Penn women’s volleyball team was on the road to play in a non-conference matchup with the Grinnell College Pioneers on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, the game did not go the way the Statesmen (10-13, 5-8 Heart) were hoping as they were defeated by the Pioneers (18-2) in straight sets by the scores of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-19.

Alicia Jaquez led the team with nine kills while Corrin Lepper and Alyssa Young each finished with six apiece. Libby Zorn and Nesreen Iskandrani each had four blocks each. Annalise Whitcomb was called on for setting duties and finished with a team-high 15 assists. She also served up a game-high 15 aces, and Macy Bailey also had seven.

The Statesmen were outhit .159 to .138 in taking the loss.

Defensively, William Penn got a trio of quality outings. Casi Gacusana led the team with 11 digs and Cameryn Campbell recorded 10. Whitcomb just narrowly missed a double-double, as she finished with nine digs.

The Statesmen had four blocked shots, while the Pioneers blocked three.

The Statesmen will continue their non-conference schedule by playing next in the Grand View Tournament, hosted in Des Moines, with their first game against Huntington scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
