Leland Evans matched up with sixth-ranked James Edwards of Johnston High School, who held on for a 3-2 decision to end Evans’ state wrestling tourney run in the second round of consolations Friday.

DES MOINES — Oskaloosa’s Leland Evans needed one more win to guarantee placing at 138 pounds in the 2020 state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena Friday. Every wrestler at the tournament is a good one, and Evans needed to defeat a ranked one to advance.

Evans (31-11) matched up with No. 6 James Edwards (33-5) of Johnston High School in the second round of consolations.

Edwards scored the first takedown of the match, but Evans wasn’t frazzled as he earned the escape to trail 2-1 going into the second period. Edwards started on the bottom and earned a pretty quick escape to build a 3-1 lead going into the third period.

Evans started on bottom in the third and would get his escape with a little under a minute left. Evans needed a takedown, but Edwards stuffed every attempt and held on for a 3-2 decision to end Evans’ tourney run.

Evans finishes his junior campaign with a record of 31-11.
