OSKALOOSA—William Penn hit the hardwood one last time before the holiday break with a Heart of America Athletic Conference showdown against Evangel.

The Statesmen (12-1, 6-1 Heart) fell behind the Crusaders (6-5, 3-3 Heart) early but gathered themselves and found a nice rhythm offensively that helped lead them to a 113-84 thrashing. It was the eighth time this season the navy and gold have surpassed the 100-point total.

William Penn shot 51.9% from the field and 35.7% from downtown compared to 44.3% from the field and 32.1% from long range for its counterparts.

The first five minutes of the game belonged to Evangel as they gained a 13-8 lead early but after the 15:00 mark in the first half, it was all Statesmen. Karmari Newman (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) nailed six three-pointers as he led the game in scoring with 25 points.

Four others scored in double-figures for the Statesmen including Dexter Hood (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.) with 19 points, Q Cager (Jr., Hopkinsville, Ky., Wellness and Recreation) 18 points, Brandon Faison (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) 13 points, and Eddie Daley (Jr., DeWitt, Mich., Business Management) with 11 points.

Cager paced the facilitating efforts finishing with seven assists while Chanze Cruesoe (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Business Management) added five himself.

It was a team effort on the boards as William Penn outrebounded Evangel 51-32 with 11 different players logging at least one. Cager and Faison spearheaded the efforts each grabbing seven while Hood was just behind them with six.

The Statesmen dominated in the paint with a 62-40 edge and forced 11 turnovers, turning them into 17 points.

“We played very well today.” said Head Coach John Henry, “When we are running and sharing the ball like we did today it’s fun to watch.”

Next Up: William Penn will return from the holiday break with a matchup against Baker in Oskaloosa on January 4.
