MONTEZUMA – North Mahaska opened the 2021 golf season under sunlit skies and a warm breeze Monday at Montezuma Country Club with teams from Montezuma and Lynnville-Sully competing. Montezuma won the team title for both boys and girls with a 178 and 227 respectively. North Mahaska boys were runner-up while Monte had the only complete girls’ team.
Montezuma’s Maguire DeJong was meet medalist with a 43 edging North Mahaska’s Blake Readshaw on a card playoff. Readshaw also recorded a 43. Brock Walkup followed Readshaw with a 45 and Dodge Duke shot a 48. Nash Smith and Jayden Steil tied for the fourth spot with a 49 and Ethan Fogle finished with a 51 but did not figure into the team score.
Roni Layman earned runner up honors for the NM girls with a round of 50. She finished second overall to Lynnville-Sully’s Greenlee Smock, who carded a 43. Macy Moore finished with a 54 and Libby Groom had a 62.
North Mahaska boys had two junior varsity golfers compete. Carter Lake shot a 57 and Isaiah Ashman shot an 83.
