OSKALOOSA—The Oskaloosa girls basketball team hosted Grinnell for their season home-opener Friday night. There were plenty of fans on hand to cheer on the home team, and the student section was packed and enthusiastic.

It was a close contest very early on, as both teams were tied at 18 by the end of the first quarter. But that was as close as the Indians could keep it the rest of the game. The Tigers went on a 17-6 run in the second quarter and led 35-24 at the half.

By the third quarter Oskaloosa tightened up on their defense and kept pace with the Tigers with some effective defensive rebounding by Makenna Schaffner . The Tiger defense then responded in the fourth quarter, holding the Indians to only 8 total points.

Senior Mary Nelson paced the offense, scoring 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting, including 4 three-pointers. Jillian Jennings scored 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting. Amanda Fay added 10 points on 4 of 6 from the floor. Kaylee Johnson had 4 points, and Macie Krier and Ashlee Smith added 3 points each.

The Indians took a 1-3 record into Monday night’s matchup at home against North Mahaska after falling 66-24 at Knoxville Saturday.
