PELLA—After leading Central College to a share of an American Rivers title and an NCAA Division III playoff berth, five Dutch players were named to the All-West Region team.

Kicker Jon Alberts (senior, Huntley, Ill.) was a first-team selection. Tabbed for the third team were quarterback Blaine Hawkins (senior, Ankeny), offensive guard Josh Mayhew (junior, Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS), offensive tackle Cody Smith (senior, Orland Park, Ill.) and defensive tackle Blade Durbala (junior, Blairstown).

Central has now had 40 all-region selections, the most of any conference school. The site first presented all-region awards in 2005.

Alberts was the only league player on this year’s all-region first team. He was earlier named a first-team AFCA Division III All-American and is a three-time first-team all-conference honoree. Alberts is a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award as the top kicker from a non-Division I FBS school.

Alberts was a perfect 59-of-59 on extra points this year while connecting on 11 of 13 field goals (84.6%) with a long of 48 yards. He was 33 of 38 for his career on field goals while hitting 143 of 148 extra-point tries. Of his 84 kickoffs, 20 went for touchbacks.

He set a school season record for most extra points (59) and ranked fifth in field goals (11) after setting the school season mark of 14 in 2017. He ranked third in season field goal percentage (84.6%), establishing the school record of 87.5% in 2017.

On the school career charts, Alberts is first in field-goal percentage (86.8), third in field goals (33), fifth in field goal attempts (38), third in extra points (143), second in extra-point percentage (96.6%) and sixth in scoring (242). His 55-yard field goal at Wartburg College in 2018 was also a school record.

Hawkins was the American Rivers offensive player of the year. He completed 252 of 382 passes (66.0%) for 3,302 yards with 14 interceptions and 44 touchdowns. He also rushed for 522 yards and nine scores on 133 carries. Hawkins set school records for season pass completions, yards and touchdowns. He ranks second in Division III in points responsible for (322), third in TD passes, seventh in passing yards, 13th in total offense (316.6 yards per game), 15th in passing efficiency (169.3), 17th in completion percentage and 33rd in completions per game (20.9).

Smith is a three-time all-conference honoree and a two-time first-team selection.

Durbala was also a first-team all-conference pick. He recorded 55 tackles, including 32 solos, with 10.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.

Mayhew was a second-team all-conference selection.

The All-America squad will be released Dec. 20 at the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

Central posted a 10-2 record, including a 9-1 regular-season mark, gaining a share of a record 31st conference title and a 21st NCAA berth, reaching the second round.
