NEWTON — It was a somewhat disappointing day for the majority of the Oskaloosa wrestlers at a Class 3A district tournament Saturday at Newton High School.

The Indians finiahed fourth in the team standings with 161.5 points as Southeast Polk won the team title with 199 points.

Oskaloosa did get a pair of state qualifiers in fourth-ranked Kaleb Brown at 112 pounds and No. 8-ranked Brett Sams at 119.

Both freshmen received first-round byes then copied each other by pinning their opponents in the semifinal and winning by major decision in the finals.

Brown (34-2) defeated Bill Borseth of Southeast Polk 10-0 in the championship match while Sams (34-6) bested Nate Williams of Des Moines East 17-6 in his final.

“We are obviously very excited for Kaleb and Brett,” Oskaloosa coach Bret Foster said. “They will both go up to Des Moines ready to compete. They are freshmen, but they have both wrestled in a lot of tough tournaments in their lives. They probably have more experience than a lot of upperclassmen. They’ll be ready.”

Oskaloosa was in second place after the first round of action as nine wrestlers advanced with wins.

But only Brown and Sams and Kris Curry at 189 would win their semifinal matches and the Indians would lose the other six matches in the semifinals.

Curry lost to Knoxville’s Jordy Ammons 4-2 in triple overtime in the championship match then was pinned by Ottumwa’s Seth Johnson in 35 seconds in the wrestleback match.

“This was a solid district and we knew coming in that we would have to step up and wrestle above our seeds to get some qualifiers and finish higher in the team race,” Foster said. “Unfortunately that didn’t happen today. It wasn’t from a lack of effort, the boys wrestled hard, it just wasn’t our day. It felt like we couldn’t catch a break.

“We are disappointed for the kids that didn’t qualify for state. They worked hard all season for today and to see a lot of kids come so close but not get into state is hard. We have a young team, so most of these guys will get another shot at it.”

The team’s lone seniors — Jake Evans at 145 and John Adair at 171 — were third and sixth respectively as they closed out their Oskaloosa wrestling careers.

“Our seniors, Jake and John, were great for us this year. It’s hard to see seniors wrestle their last matches, but they are both great guys who have great futures ahead of them,” Foster said.
