EDDYVILLE — A Monroe County rivalry came to a head Tuesday night when the Lady Dees of Albia paid a visit to the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Rockets. After a lack luster and error filled first half, the Rockets came out in the third quarter and burned the Dees with an 11-2 run to take control of the game with a 33-16 lead.
“After a slow first half, we came out strong in the third period,” Rocket coach Tony Fenton said. “That is the best second half start we have had and we really needed that. We missed so many easy shots and we had way too many turnovers. We got into foul trouble early and we need to clean that up.”
Albia got the early lead with a three-point basket by Halle Hindman, but the Rockets answered with a drive to the hoop by Emalee Davis and a pair of mid-range jumpers by Whitney Klyn to take a lead that they would not surrender. A triple by Brooke Shafer, an inside bucket by RyLee German and a baseline shot by Klyn gave EBF a 13-8 lead after the first eight minutes.
The Lady Dees opened the second stanza with a pair of free throws by Jennifer Jones-Kelly and an inside bucket by Sophia Waber to pull to within one at 13-12. Shafer then drained a shot from behind the arc to start a 9-2 EBF run that would give the Rockets a 22-14 halftime lead.
The Rockets would open the second half with a long ball from Lillie Hynick and then they began to pound the ball inside to German for a pair of baskets and inside buckets from Davis and Klyn. A more active offense produced a 35-26 lead after three periods and then an 18-5 fourth quarter spread resulted in a 53-31 win.
Balance was the key to the EBF win as Klyn led the way with 12 points and she was closely followed by German with 11 and Shafer with nine. German led the team on the glass with eight rebounds and Klyn yanked down seven boards.
The Rockets will hit the road Friday night for a South Central Conference battle with the Mustangs of Davis County.
