PELLA — Jay Pike will be seeing some turnover in his Pella wrestling lineup this season as the third-year head coach will look to replace seven seniors that had roles in the lineup, including both of his state qualifiers from last year.

Pike does still have some good returnees for this season including Andrew Vanderhoff (106/113, 7-22 last year), Damion Clark (120, 27-8), Logan Schroeder (126, 20-18), TR Putz (145, 25-12), Peyton Ritzert (138, 27-11), Jackson VanKley (160, 21-20) and Noah Parsons (182/195, 14-21). Quinn Rhamy (152, 16-11), Gavin Norton (160, 19-15) and Daniel Loftis (220, 9-13) also lettered last year for the Dutch.

VanKley and Rhamy were both one win away from a trip to state last year while Clark and Putz also both took third at districts and could be in line for a trip to Des Moines this season.

Much like last year where several freshmen worked their way into the lineup, don’t count out any incoming freshmen to fight for some time on the mat for the Dutch.

“We have quite a few freshman with some talent coming in,” Pike said. “Our room is going to be tougher because of it.”

Pike owns a 17-17 dual record in his first two seasons and helped lead the Dutch to a second place finish as a team at districts along with a third place finish in the Little Hawkeye Conference Meet.

Pella sent one to state in Pike’s first year and then two last year. The Dutch will hope that trend continues as they are excited for how the schedule has shaped up for this season including four home dates and some tough tournaments to get them ready for the postseason.

“Our first home dual is going to be a fun one,” Pike said. “We will have a super fun environment with Newton and Clarke of Osceola coming in. We are hoping for a huge turnout and to promote the sport of wrestling as much as we can here in Pella.”
