Caleb Silver is making his second NCAA national cross country meet appearance

PELLA — As anticipated, three Central College runners were named as at-large individual qualifiers Sunday for the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships.

Caroline McMartin (junior, Pella) will compete for the second consecutive year in the women’s championship race. Then Noah Jorgenson (junior, Sidney) and Caleb Silver (senior, Conrad, BCLUW HS) will be in the men’s race field. It will be the second national meet appearance for Silver and the first for Jorgenson.

The women’s race will start at 11 a.m. (Eastern Time) next Saturday at the Forest Akers Golf Course on the Michigan State University campus in Lansing, Michigan with the men’s race at noon. Olivet College (Minn.) and the Greater Lansing Sports Authority are serving as championship hosts.

Central’s hopes of its women’s squad cracking the field as a team qualifier were dashed. The Dutch placed fifth in the Division III Midwest Regional meet Saturday at the Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course in Geneva, Illinois. The top four team finishers were awarded berths. Each field includes 32 teams and 70 individuals from non-qualifying teams.

McMartin was comfortably in the field after finishing 11th in the 6,000-meter regional race in 22:14.3. She was 118th at the national meet last year.

Jorgenson was eighth in the region in 25:19.2 on the 8,000-meter course. Silver was 13th Saturday in 25:26.0. Silver was 89th in last year’s national meet.
