PELLA — The Pella Dutch played excellent basketball in the first half against a strong DC-G Mustang unit, but could not maintain the intensity in the second half. Pella had taken leads of 13-9 after one quarter of play and they led 30-28 at the halftime break. But it was the Mustangs that came out of the halftime break with a 13-3 run to take control of the game.
It was the DC-G big man, Calix Cahill that fueled that run with a pair of rebound put backs, another inside bucket and a free throw. After that big run, the Dutch could get no closer than nine points to the Mustangs as DC-G enjoyed a 34-17 second half edge on their way to a 62-47 win.
The Dutch opened the game with an 11-1 run as Cam Schulte got things rolling with an inside basket and a triple. Romon Hugen and Brayden Traetow also drained three-point baskets in that run. In the final three minutes of the quarter the Mustangs used an 8-2 run to pull themselves back into contention. Luke Keitges had the lone Pella basket in that span of time.
The Dutch found three-point land to be a friendly place to open the second stanza. Schulte, Traetow and Luke Hardman each rifled in a three ball and Hardman put a rebound back for a 24-13 Pella lead at the four minute mark.
The pendulum would swing the other way as DC-G used a 15-6 run to draw within two points at halftime. That run featured six consecutive free throws by three different players and a trey by Hudson Ehlert. The Mustangs appeared to grab the momentum with the run just before halftime and when the second half opened, they cranked it up a notch.
“We played a super first half,” Pella coach Derek Schulte said. “We battled hard with great energy and execution. But we couldn’t keep them off the free throw line in the second quarter and that was the beginning of our downfall. To their credit, DC-G made some big plays in the second half and we just couldn’t respond. Cam Schulte had an excellent game and he was our bright spot for the night. We just couldn’t find enough offense in the second half and that is something we will keep working on.”
The Dutch record falls to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Pella will be at home for a pair of games this week. Des Moines Christian visits on Tuesday and Norwalk come to town on Friday.
