OSKALOOSA — Area athletes will be flocking to Drake Stadium this week for the Iowa State Track and Field Meet. The Pella boys are poised to be in the hunt for a state title again this year while Oskaloosa and Pella Christian athletes are also looking to leave their marks on the famed Blue Oval.
Starting with the Dutch, the boys won the 3A state title in 2021 and finished just 1.5 points behind first place Dallas Center-Grimes last year. This year Western Dubuque figures to be their main competition although if Pella holds their seedings, it could be a runaway win for the Dutch.
Chase Lauman comes into his final meet representing the Dutch after a fantastic long distance running career. He was a Drake Relays champion in the 3200 and was runner-up in the 1600 and 800. He will have a chance to score big points in all three events for Pella this week as well as anchoring the distance medley to a potential top finish.
Also keep an eye on the throws as the duo of Brandon Fischer and Hanson King have been going one-two at most meets all year and will be battling for top spots in the discus and shot put.
Several other events like CJ Shetterly in the 100, 4x100 and 4x200 as well as the shuttle hurdle relay, who won last year with a new state-record time but only return one from that quartet, will have a chance to pick up some points to help the cause for the Dutch.
The Lady Dutch could have an interesting weekend with several events seeded right on the edge of the top eight that would earn points and medals.
Jacie Trine enters the meet in four events and will be someone to watch in the 200 (eighth seed) and 400 (fourth seed) as well one a couple of the relays. Abby Teagarden comes in seeded eighth in the 800 and will also mix into those relays.
The Lady Dutch sit near medaling position on five relays with the 4x400 figuring to be their best chance at a top finish as they come in seeded third. Meanwhile they need good showings from their 4x100 (ninth seed), 4x200 (ninth seed), sprint medley (eighth seed) and distance medley (10th seed) to grab points there.
Also keep an eye on freshman Marissa Ferebee in the distance runs. The field will be chancing Ballard’s Paityn Noe but Ferebee has shown she has the ability to be in the top eight at state in the 1600 and 3200.
For Oskaloosa, they are sending a handful of events on the girls side and a couple for the boys. The girls will be highlighted by Maleah Walker as the senior enters her final state meet. She won three medals a year ago in the long jump, 100 and 200 and she has qualified for all three again this year. She enters the long jump seeded fourth and should have a really good chance for a medal there but will need good runs in the 100 and 200 as she enters those seeded 14th and 19th, respectively. A new addition for Walker has been running the second leg of Osky’s distance medley. She recently joined the group late in the season with Hannah Quang, Evelyn Adam and Tierney Carter and the quartet has been great as they enter the week seeded sixth in the event.
Those other three also have busy weeks in other events that come in just outside the top eight seeds before combining again for the 4x400 with Ryleigh Wilken, which enters as the seventh seed.
The Osky boys qualified in four events this week. Tatum Westercamp will be in three of those as he leaped into the long jump as the 16th seed while he could find himself in the finals in the 110 hurdles as the fourth seed. He finished 16th in the hurdles last year. Westercamp will also anchor the team’s shuttle hurdle relay along with Dom Piersel, JT Baker and Waylon Bolibaugh. That quartet enters as the 14th seed while Bolibaugh will also run in the 400 hurdles as the 18th seed.
Pella Christian has a handful of entries on the girls and boys side, both will be highlighted in the sprints. For the girls, freshman Meredith Van Wyk enters as the sixth seed in the 100 and second seed in the 200 while fellow freshman Bailey Vos is the top seed in the 400. Those two will also run the last two legs of the sprint medley that enters as the sixth seed.
For the Eagle boys, Isaac Kacmarynski comes in as the fifth seed in the 100 and fourth seed in the 200. People will also need to keep in eye on the throws where Trevor Veenstra figures to be in the mix to win both the discus and the shot put after finishing in the top three in both at the Drake Relays.
The State Track and Field Meet is from May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
