Who: Pella (8-26) vs Grinnell (14-16)
What: Class 4A - Region 4 - Quarterfinal
When: Thursday, July 8 at 7 p.m.
Pella owns a 25-10 record in the series since 2009. Grinnell has won seven of the last 10 meetings with the Lady Dutch snapping a six-game losing streak against Tigers last week with a 9-8 win. Pella used a seven-run fifth inning to get in front before holding off a late Grinnell rally.
One key player for Pella
This is a very young Pella squad with no seniors and a couple of juniors. Tori Van Vark is one of those upperclassmen who also had a big game in that win against Grinnell. The catcher was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Pella will need her offense but also her leadership behind the plate in this win or go home game. Grinnell’s lineup can be dangerous and she will need to be sharp behind the plate and giving confidence to her pitcher.
Keys for Pella
The offense will need to be there for Pella. They only average 3.7 runs per game this season but have averaged six runs over their last seven games where they have a 5-2 record. Pella is peaking at the right time and they will need their bats to produce against a Grinnell squad that will likely get their own. Ella Corbin is coming off a strong outing on Tuesday and will likely get the ball for the Lady Dutch. She owns a 5-6 record with a 5.80 ERA and 53 strikeouts against 60 walks in 79 2/3 innings. She will need to limit those walks and trust the defense behind her, which will need to be sharp. Pella will have a lot of confidence entering this game with their recent play and recent win against the Tigers. If they continue trending up, they could grab themselves a nice postseason win.
