Who: Pella Christian (14-18) vs East Marshall (14-12)
What: Class 2A - Region 4 - Quarterfinal
Where: Pella Christian
When: Wednesday, July 7 at 7 p.m.
These two met in the first week of the season at the Williamsburg Tournament. Pella Christian edged out the win in that one, 7-6. The game was back and forth with Alexa Dunsbergen eventually getting the game-winning RBI single to win it in eight innings.
One key player for Pella Christian
Dunsbergen will end up being a big piece of the rematch as well. She will likely get the ball for PC and has been up and down with an 11-10 record to go with a 5.58 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings. She doesn’t strike out a lot of people but she has the stuff to keep hitters from hard contact and allow her defense to make easy plays. Dunsbergen can also help her own cause with her bat, where she sports a .274 average with 13 RBIs and could come up with a couple big hits for the Eagles.
Keys for Pella Christian
Can PC get enough contributions from the rest of their lineup as well as play sharp defensively? The Eagles’ top four hitters have been dangerous for them this season but they haven’t always had the depth in their lineup. PC needs to spread the wealth on offense throughout the lineup to take some of the pressure of the top and their defense. As mentioned earlier, Dunsbergen is a pitch to contact pitcher so the PC defense will need to be locked in and make plays to keep momentum and shutdown potential rallies from East Marshall. If Pella Christian wins, they get to host another game at home in the regional semifinals on Friday.
