PELLA — Entering the match for the first time in the 65th minute, freshman midfielder Kirsten Small (Spencer) struck for a goal in the 79th minute to give the Central College women’s soccer team a 1-0 win at Cornell College Sunday afternoon.
The Dutch (2-1-0) defeated the Rams (1-2-0) for the eighth consecutive time. The Rams are the preseason favorites in the Midwest Conference.
“We really had to grit this one out,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “We outshot them 17-3 and had them beat 3-0 on corners. Statistically, we really did our job to put them away.”
Small came on as a second-half substitute and made her first collegiate goal count in a big way. The assist came from midfielder Paige Cahill (sophomore, Castle Rock, Colo., Castle View HS).
“She didn’t play in the first half but made an immediate impact in the second half” Kobylinski said. “She had a great work rate.”
Goalkeeper Jasmyn Bush (sophomore, La Porte City, Union HS) secured a clean sheet while making two saves. The starting back line of Sydney Canney (senior, Adel, ADM HS), Maddi Fisher (sophomore, Linn-Mar HS), Bridget Lynch (junior, Northglenn, Colo., Jefferson Academy) and Alyssa Knuth (junior, Benton Harbor, Mich., St. Joseph HS) played all 90 minutes in front of Bush.
“Jasmyn’s communication was outstanding,” Kobylinski said. “They all played really solidly.”
