Pella Christian's Emri Agre (12) made three threes against EBF

EDDYVILLE — Two teams that had not had a lot of success shooting the ball this season erupted at the same time when the Pella Christian girls paid a visit to the Rockets of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. When the smoke had cleared, 26 three point shots had cracked the nets of the EBF gymnasium and the Rockets were in possession of an 83-61 victory.

The Eagles rained in 16 shots from behind the arc while the Rockets drained 10 long balls, but the Rockets got more milage from their inside and transition games.

EBF jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game behind a baseline drive and a pair of free throws by Aliya Wagamon, a mid-range jumper by Ava Eastlick and a breakaway layup by Molly Shafer. The Eagles countered with four three point bombs to tie the score at 12-12. Emri Agre canned a pair of threes and Karli Anderson and Faith Kacmarynski each notched one.

Kacmarynski completed the Eagle scoring for the first quarter with another three, giving the Eagles 15 points all coming from behind the arc. The Rockets finished the first period with a pair of triples by Eastlick for a 20-15 lead.

EBF outscored the Eagles 14-6 in the second stanza to take a 34-21 lead into intermission. Eastlick had the only three in the quarter, but the Rockets were able to come up with defensive plays that resulted in points at the other end. Whitney Klyn had a pair of buckets, Shafer had a breakaway and a pair of free throws and Wagamon scored from the baseline.

The tempo picked up in the third period and the shooting gallery was open. Eastlick rifled in a pair of threes for the Rockets and Shafer and Klyn each had a long ball. Pella Christian countered with a pair of triples from Joslyn Terpstra and one each from Agre and Anderson. But it was the Rockets that pulled away to a 57-39 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

The Rockets were on a roll and good inside ball movement gave them numerous opportunities to score in the inside while Eastlick pumped in two more treys and Makia Sinnif added another. The Eagles tried to keep pace with three triples from Terpstra and a and a pair by Anderson, but it was to no avail as the Rockets sailed into victory lane with an 83-61 win.

“We needed a win,” Rocket Coach Tony Fenton said. “We shot the best we have shot all season and we were able to hit from three-point land. We still missed too many easy shots, but we stayed with it. We were able to answer all their big shots”.

The game quickly became a shooting duel between Eastlick of the Rockets and Terpstra of the Eagles. Both players checked in with 25 points and seven three-point goals each, but Eastlick had more help from her mates. Klyn popped in 20 points while Wagamon and Shafer were also in double digits with 18 and 13 points respectively. Klyn also completed a double-double with 10 assists and Wagamon grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Anderson was the only other Eagle in double digits with 12 points.

The Rockets are off until after the holidays and then they visit a tough Chariton team on Jan. 4 followed by a visit to unbeaten SCC leading Centerville on Jan. 7. The Eagles host rugged Little Hawkeye Conference foe, Dallas Center-Grimes on the Jan. 4 and then travel to Newton on Jan. 7.
