Pella Christian's Jack Fancher (2) made a 47-yarder against Van Buren, tying for the school record with Trey Hugen

PELLA — It didn’t take the Pella Christian Eagles long to establish dominance as they hit the Van Buren Warriors with 35 first quarter points on their way to a 45-0 shellacking Friday night on Eagle Lane. It was the opening game of district play and the Eagles made it clear that they will contend for the district title.

The Warriors won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. That meant that PC would have the football first. Perhaps that was not a good choice, but then it may have been a matter of pick your poison.

The kick was short and the Eagles put the ball in play at their own 43-yard line. Carries of eight, 17 and 22 yards by Benny Schirz gave PC a first and goal at the VB 10-yard line. Quarterback Isaac Kacmarynski found Trevor Veenstra open in the flat for a 10-yard scoring strike. Jack Fancher drilled the PAT kick for a 7-0 Eagle lead only two minutes gone in the game.

The stout Pella Christian defense did its thing and after three plays the Warriors were forced to punt. The kick was short and the Eagles were in business again from the VB 43-yard line. Kacmarynski went to the air and found Fancher for a 19-yard gain and then a 13-yard strike to Schirz put the ball first and goal on the Warrior five. Kacmarynski sliced through the defense for the score and Fancher did his thing for a 14-0 PC lead.

The Warriors did manage a first down on the next series before the PC defense rose up and forced a punt. Schirz gathered in the punt at the PC 40-yard line and danced and juked for a 60-yard touchdown run. The kick by Fancher gave the Eagles a 21-0 lead with 4:40 left in the first quarter. There is more to come.

The Eagle defense sent the Warriors in reverse and a punt was necessary. The kick was short and a big penalty on Van Buren gave PC the ball on the Warrior 21. On the first play, Schirz knifed his way through the defense for the score and Fancher set the score at 28-0 with 2:19 left in quarter number one.

It didn’t take long for things to go from bad to worse for the Warriors. Collin Vander Wal picked off a VB pass and the Eagles had the football on the Van Buren 35. A penalty and a 13-yard dart by Peyton Ritzert gave PC a first down and then Kacmarynski bolted 17 yards to score. Fancher was perfect again and Pella Christian brought the curtain down on the first period with a 35-0 lead.

In the second stanza, the Eagles kind of slipped into cruise control, but yet the Warriors were unable to dent the vaunted Eagle defense. Near the end of the first half, Schirz ripped off a 36-yard run and Fancher added yet another PAT kick for a 42-0 halftime lead.

The second half was played with a running clock and many of the Eagles reserves got into the action. The defense was still in the shutout mode and the highlight of the half was a school record tying 47-yard field goal by Fancher.

If a player of the game were to be selected, Fancher would be a strong candidate. The senior kicker nailed six PAT kicks, boomed a 47-yard field goal and put every kickoff into the endzone for a touchback. With no kickoff returns, the Warriors were always forced to start deep in their own territory.

“We were sharp on offense and crisp on defense,” Eagle Coach Rick Kacmarynski said. “The defense set the tone for the game and the offense was clicking. Jack Fancher gave us a great kicking game and we were able to play a lot of kids.”

The Eagles are 4-0 to start the season and 1-0 in district play. An early district showdown looms on the horizon for this Friday when Pella Christian travels to Sigourney to battle the Savage Cobras of Sigourney-Keota.
