EDDYVILLE — It was summer time at last and the athletes at the EBF Rocket Relays responded with some great performances Tuesday night in Eddyville. The Pella Christian Eagles pushed the Mustangs from PCM to the wire before the Mustangs escaped with a 147-144 win. The home standing Rockets, led by a gold medal double by Thane Alexander, finished third with 116 points.

The Eagles got off to a great start with three victories in the field events. Trevor Veenstra took the gold in both the Shot Put (43-05.25) and the Discus (116-10) while teammate Drew Geetings caught fire on the high jump pad to grab the gold with a personal best jump of six feet one inch.

“I was into it today,” Geetings said. “Everything felt right and I just kept going. I have been jumping since seventh grade, but this was the best. It was a fun time and I enjoyed the competition.”

The Rockets also had a field event winner when Daniel Hartman soared 19 feet, nine inches to capture the Long Jump title on his senior night. Freshman, Brooks Moore, was in the very competitive High Jump battle, but finished third with a leap of 5-08.

When the focus shifted to the track, two athletes commanded the attention. Alexander turned in personal bests in both hurdle races on his senior night. He ran a blistering 15.87 time in winning the 110 High Hurdles and then came back to run a sizzling 57.74 time in the 400 Hurdles.

“It is very special to double tonight,” Alexander said. “This is my last home meet before the conference and qualifying meets and my efforts tonight will help to boost my confidence. The 400 Hurdles was a great race. I was in third coming into the home stretch, but I was able to reach back for a little extra and caught the leaders over the final hurdle. The good competition in the highs pushed me to my best time. Now it is time to go back to work and get ready for the big meets down the road.”

The second athlete to impress was Pella Christian’s Levi Schelhaas. Schelhaas scorched the track with a clocking of 22.56 in the 200 meters and he anchored the 4x100 Relay to a time of 45.5.

Other area winners were PC’s Ryan Natelborg with wins in the 1600 (5:10.64) and the 3200 (11:03.39), and the Rocket’s Jesse Cornelison in the 400 Meters (54.92).

Pella Christian Coach, Keith Anderson, felt that his team is rounding into shape.

“We ran very well tonight with a lot of personal bests,” Anderson said. “This meet will set us up nicely for the conference and state qualifying meets in the next two weeks. We are beginning to peak and we are right where we want to be. Now we just have to keep kids healthy and fresh.”

The Rocket JV team scored 62 points in the Class B division and Thomas McCrea was a winner in the 110 Meter High Hurdles with a time of 19.33.
