PELLA — Two teams from the Little Hawkeye Conference without a conference win met at Pella Christian Friday night and it was the Eagles that escaped the cellar with a convincing 55-39 win.

A fast start buoyed the Pella Christian hopes as the Eagles bolted out to a 14-5 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Allison Van Gorp and Emma Witzenberg accounted for all of the PC scoring with Van Gorp pounding home four baskets and Witzenberg driving to the hoop for three buckets.

The Eagle defense was still solid in the second stanza as they held the Cardinals to only seven points. Avery Baugh got into the scoring column in this quarter with a three-point bomb and a layup following a steal. Van Gorp added an inside basket and a pair of free throws and Witzenberg connected from the inside for a 25-12 halftime lead for the Eagles.

The third period found Pella Christian getting active from behind the arc. Joslyn Terpstra rained in a pair of three balls and Anna Bonnett and Witzenberg each had a triple. That outburst allowed PC to extend their lead to 43-26 heading into the final frame and they coasted home from there.

“We have been through the meat grinder in our league,” Pella Christian coach Brad Engbers said. “It was nice to get that first conference win. The kids played hard and our early success increased our confidence level. Anna Bonnett had her best game with eight steals and six assists. She had some real nice interior feeds.”

Van Gorp led the Eagles with 22 points and nine rebounds while Witzenberg chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds.

The Eagles have a pair of road games to open next week. They are at Knoxville on Monday and at Oskaloosa on Tuesday before returning home Friday for the inner-city tussle with Pella.
