PELLA — The Eagles could not gain any traction in the doubleheader on Monday night against the Grinnell Tigers.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Owen Coffman would cap off the inning with a homerun to right field.
In the bottom of the first inning, Pella Christian would get the bases loaded and score four in the bottom of the first inning. Caleb Belzer would get the scoring started with a single to to center field scoring one. Elliot Menninga would double on a line drive to right field scoring two. Grinnell in the top of the second inning would add three more runs on a pass ball and an error. The Tigers would make the score 7-4 at the end of the second inning.
The Eagles would try to make a comeback in the fifth inning as they would score two runs on error after Lincoln Vander Molen hit a ball to third base and the third baseman would make a throwing error trying to make the great play on a slow rolling ball. Collin Vander-Waal hit a line drive to left field and the left fielder could not make the diving catch as a run would score putting the game at 8-7 with the Eagles trailing by one.
Grinnell extended the lead to 12-7 in the top of the sixth inning as they would go up four more runs and keep the lead for the rest of the game. In the seventh inning they would score three more runs to end the game in a victory of 15-7.
Coffman would lead the way on the mound for the Tigers as he pitched four innings allowing eight hits and giving up five runs while striking out four.
Bennett Spronk got the start on the mound for the Eagles. He would give up eight runs on nine hits. over 4 2/3 innings. Spronk would also add four strikeouts to his total on the season. Vander Molen would come in for relief for the rest of the game.
Belzer and Kyle Branderhorst each collected multiple hits to lead the Eagles in the batting column.
For the second game of of the doubleheader, the Tigers would go on to shut out the Eagles as they would take the game 4-0. Grinnell would score two in the top of the fourth. They would take the lead off a pair of sacrifices from Coffman and Jaylen Eitel. They would also score one run in the fifth and the seventh inning.
Brady Steward was the man on the mound for the Tigers. He pitched for 6 2/3 innings. He gave up four hits and no runs. Steward also collected seven strikeouts.
Vander Molen led the way on the mound for the Eagles. He allowed three runs on four hits over six innings. He also struck out seven in the start.
Pella Christian (7-15) will hosting DCG (8-11) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
