GRINNELL — The Grinnell Tigers proved that their ranking was no fluke as they belted the Pella Christian Eagles 59-21 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. It seems like the Tigers start pressing teams when they get off the bus and they never let up.
The Tigers are 10 deep and it really doesn’t matter who is in the game. All ten play the pressing, run and shoot game well and they punish opposing defenses.
Grinnell raced away to a 15-4 lead five minutes into the game and they never took their foot off the gas pedal. PC was able to cut the deficit to 16-8 after one quarter with an inside bucket by Allison Van Gorp and a perimeter shot by Jenna Van Maanen.
The Tigers then went on a 21-5 romp in the second stanza to take a 37-13 lead into intermission. The only points the Eagles could muster would be an inside bucket by Van Gorp and a three point basket by Avery Baugh.
The third period was Pella Christian’s best quarter as Grinnell outscored them by only two points at 10-8. Van Gorp had a pair of baskets and a free throw while Emri Agre nailed a triple. But the final quarter was not good for the Eagles as they failed to score.
“Their pressure is intense,” PC coach Brad Engbers said. “We tried to adjust, but turnovers got us into a deep hole. They have at least 10 athletic players and they practice with pressure and they play with pressure. Not many teams in our league can replicate that kind of pressure in practice.”
Van Gorp led the Eagles with nine points and five rebounds.
The Eagles will host Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Tuesday night before taking some time off for the holidays.
