Pella Christian seniors

Pella Christian's seniors hold up their state participant trophy after their 35-14 loss to Dike-New Hartford

DIKE — There can sometime be a couple of key plays and moments that change the course of a tough playoff game. Those moments seemed to all go No. 5 Dike-New Hartford’s way on Friday as No. 7 Pella Christian saw their season end in a 35-14 defeat to the Wolverines.

It was drops and incompletions on long passes and Wolverine fourth down conversions, but the first key moment going against the Eagles started on the Dike-New Hartford opening kickoff as the ball fluttered in the breezy fall air and bounced off a PC returner with the Wolverines eagerly jumping on the loose ball to give them a short field to open the game.

D-NH quickly capitalized on the misplay by scoring four plays later to jump ahead 7-0.

Pella Christian needed an answer and they got one as they took the ensuing drive down the field with quarterback Isaac Kacmarynski finding Eric Mulder on a jump ball in the end zone for a 10-yard pitch and catch for the tying TD.

Dike-New Hartford would later cap off a long drive with a quarterback sneak to get back in front 14-7 at the end of the first.

The Eagles would tie the game again in the second quarter with a little déjà vu as Kacmarynski found the 6-foot-8 Mulder on another jump ball touchdown to even things up at 14-14.

Another long Wolverine drive was finished off by a QB sneak late in the half as Dike-New Hartford held a 21-14 advantage at the break.

D-NH continued to pound the rock in the third quarter and eventually put together another one of their long drives which ended with another touchdown and gave the Wolverines a 28-14 cushion with 3:46 to go in the third. The Wolverines finished with 293 rushing yards on 53 carries for the game.

Pella Christian was driving early in the fourth quarter but a turnover on downs would give the ball back to the Wolverines, who had their eyes on eating up the clock. They did just that while scoring the dagger touchdown with 31 seconds left.

Pella Christian finishes the season 8-2 and says farewell to six seniors.
