OSKALOOSA — With a huge looming matchup against the top team in Class 3A on Friday, No. 3 (3A) Pella made sure not to overlook Oskaloosa in their first game back from the winter break on Tuesday night as the Dutch took care of business, defeating the Indians 68-35.
Pella set the tone from the start, playing good defense, getting run outs and moving the ball well offensively. The Dutch would jump out to an 11-1 lead before eventually finishing the first quarter ahead 15-4 after Karl Miller’s corner three just before the buzzer.
The Indian defense would do better job in the second quarter contesting Pella threes. Keaton Flaherty, in just his second game of the season, led the Osky offense in the frame, scoring seven of the Indians’ nine points as they trailed 29-13 going into halftime.
Darryl Fane, in his third game of the season, got his offense going in the third quarter, knocking down a couple of threes and a turnaround jumper for eight of Osky’s nine points in the frame.
Oskaloosa wasn’t able to put together enough offense for a run as Pella would continue to be steady and open up the game in the second half, allowing them to empty the bench late in the game.
The Dutch shared the ball well with 17 assists on 26 made baskets while winning the turnover battle 23-8. The Indians were held to 29.8% shooting from the floor, 4-of-17 from three and 3-of-7 at the line as they were held under 40 points for the sixth straight game.
Grant Nelson would lead Pella with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block while Miller added 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, five steals and one block.
Flaherty led Oskaloosa with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals while Fane chipped in eight points and four rebounds.
