PELLA — Dallas Center-Grimes is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A girl’s basketball and the reason for that was on display in the Pella High School Gymnasium Friday night. The Lady Mustangs featured a tight and physical defense plus a power laden offense led by Emma Miner, a future D-I basketball player for St. Thomas.
The Mustangs hammered out a 15-2 lead after the first eight minutes with Miner going inside or outside. Big No. 50 fired in a pair of three-point baskets and pounded home a pair of inside shots to lead her team.
Things did not improve much for Pella in the second stanza and DC-G took a 14-7 advantage to build a 29-9 halftime lead. Kylie Tauke nailed a triple and Mia Warner and Hailey Van Vark connected on the inside for Pella.
To the credit of the Lady Dutch, they came out and outscored the Mustangs 25-20 in the second half, but the damage had been done.
Tauke led Pella in the third stanza with a bucket and three free throws, while Kennedy Van Vark, Hailey Van Vark, Eliza Van Zee and Abby Warner each had a basket. Miner tossed in five more points to lead her team.
Tristan Gordon opened the fourth period with an inside basket and Tauke converted and inside three-point play to cut the deficit to 12 points, but that would be as close as Pella could get as DC-G pulled away for the 49-34 win.
“We just got off to a slow start,” Pella coach Blaine Forsythe said. “DC-G is a well-coached team and there is a reason why they are the number one team in Class 4A. We talked to our girls at halftime about dealing with adversity in life as well as on the court. I was pleased with their response at both ends of the court. There are a number of second half positives that we can take from tonight and grow from.”
Kylie Tauke was then lone double figure scorer for Pella while Mia Warner led in rebounds with eight and Abby Warner, Tauke and Tristan Gordon led in steals with three each.
The Dutch are 9-3 overall and 5-2 in Little Hawkeye play. The Dutch have a pair of home games this week as Des Moines Christian visits on Tuesday and Norwalk comes to town on Friday.
