PELLA — A talented and athletic herd of Mustangs proved that their ranking was legit as they trampled all over the Pella Christian Eagles on Eagle Lane Tuesday night. The Mustangs were able to go at least 10 deep in their roster without missing a beat and it seemed that they came at the short-handed Eagles in waves in the 56-13 win.
The tone was set for the game early on as DC-G jumped out to a 10-0 lead 5:30 into the game and quickly increased that lead to 20-6 at the end of the first quarter. It was all about defense for Dallas Center-Grimes as their team quickness allowed them to extend their zone defense to almost mid-court. The result was many traps, forcing the Eagles into multiple turnovers and easy baskets for the Mustangs.
Eagle coach Brad Engbers had nothing but praise for the DC-G team.
“They are a really good team,” Engbers said. “They are superior athletes and they are so deep. They move the ball and they moved themselves. They were so quick that we couldn’t find good shots. We had only 17 shots at the basket for the entire game. We couldn’t find any gaps as their hands were in our faces all the time.”
The six first quarter points for PC came by way of driving basket and a pair of free throws by Joslyn Terpstra and a breakaway bucket by Jenna Van Maanen.
The Mustang defense almost pitched a shut out in the second as the only Eagle points were a pair of free throws by Terpstra with 27 seconds remaining in the first half. In the third stanza the Mustangs did get the shutout as they outscored the Eagles 14-0 to send the mercy rule 35-point clock into action.
PC scored five points in the final period as Karlie Anderson scored on a breakaway at the horn, Terpstra notched two more free throws and Chloe Huisman knocked down a free throw.
Next up for the Eagles will be another Little Hawkeye encounter at Newton Friday night.
