GRIMES — The preseason top two teams in Class 3A were in the house on Friday night for one of the premier high school matchups of the week. It was a tight low-scoring game at the half before No. 2 (3A) Dallas Center-Grimes would pull away from No. 1 (3A) Pella and go on to win the showdown 30-6.
The Pella offense had a tough night but the defense was keeping them in the game as Dallas Center-Grimes running back Zach Brand got on the outside and rumbled in for a 24-yard touchdown late in the first quarter to open up the scoring. Brand would finish with 140 yards on 31 carries.
The Dutch got their lone score of the game in the second quarter as Ryan Mace would find Reece Thoreson over the middle for a 12-yard touchdown. The extra point would be blocked but Pella was right there with the Mustangs as they trailed 7-6 at the half.
Momentum shifted to DCG in the second half they didn’t look back from there, outscoring Pella 23-0 in the final two quarters.
Pella’s offense struggled to build off of that second quarter score as they were completed just 1-of-7 passes and were held to 31 total yards in the second half and 163 total yards in the game.
Mace was 6-for-20 on the night with 91 yards passing and one touchdown to go along with 16 rushing yards. Grant Nelson caught three passes for 79 yards to lead Pella receivers. Noah Clayberg and Aidan Pollock led the Dutch with 17 rushing yards a piece.
Defensively, the guys up front led the way as Kody Huisman and Levi Roose both had 6.5 tackles while Nelson finished with 5.5 tackles of his own.
Both teams did well taking care of the ball as a Pella fumble was the only turnover on the night.
No. 7 (3A) Pella (0-1) is back in action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in their home opener against No. 2 (3A) Harlan (1-0).
