CEDAR RAPIDS — A pair of ranked teams met on Thursday in a regional semifinal matchup. Unfortunately for No. 14 Pella, it was No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier edging the Lady Dutch in the final two sets to earn the 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-23) win.
Xavier came out firing and would race to a 25-13 first set win.
Pella settled in after that point as they were deadlocked at eight with Xavier early in the second set. The Saints would pull away to go up 20-16 to force a Pella timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Lady Dutch quickly responded with a 6-2 run to tie the set at 22 and force an Xavier timeout.
But this time it was the Saints coming out strong out of the timeout, scoring the next three points to take an important second set 25-22.
The Lady Dutch didn’t waver as they stayed tight with Xavier all the way through the third set but it was once again the Saints getting the final point to edge Pella in the third set 25-23 and clinch the win.
Pella finishes the year with a 23-12 record. They will lose four seniors to graduation in Roseland Vanderhoff, Brynn Randol, Courtney Paxton and Macy Schulz.
