Pella's Taylor Tousey recorded the win for the Lady Dutch

PELLA — The Pella Lady Dutch stepped away from the Little Hawkeye Conference to welcome the Colfax-Mingo Tiger Hawks to the Pella Softball Complex Monday night. The Tiger-Hawks are a top tier team out of the South Iowa Cedar League and they came to play.

It was a good night for the Dutch as they put a straight number on the board in each of the first two innings and then they added a crooked number in the third inning to take control of the game. C-M refused to break and stayed in the game for a full seven innings before taking a 7-1 loss.

Taylor Tousey was in the circle for Pella and she notched the win by allowing only four hits, one unearned run while fanning three and walking only two. Tousey aided her own cause with a pair of base hits and her courtesy runner, Autumn Blink, would score twice.

The Tiger-Hawks drew first blood when Abigayle Rawlins and Carley Underwood received the only walks that Tousey would allow. They moved up on an infield ground out and Rawlins would score on a wild pitch. After a shaky start, Tousey would settle in and blank the Tiger-Hawks the rest of the way.

Pella would give a quick answer in the bottom of the first as Kylie Tauke poked a one out single to right field. With two out, Ella Corbin ripped a pitch into the left-center gap to score Tauke with the first Dutch run. The aggressive Corbin tried to stretch a double into a triple, but was cut down on a bang-bang play at third to end the inning.

Pella was soon in business in the bottom of the second. Tori Van Vark coaxed a base on balls before Tousey would reach on a fielder’s choice. Hailey Van Vark also drew a base on balls to move courtesy runner, Blink, into scoring position. Blink would score when Bailey Brown reached on an error.

It was in the bottom of the third that the Dutch bats began to sizzle. With one out, Kiki Riggen, Corbin and Tori Van Vark each lashed line drive hits with Van Vark’s hit driving in a run. Tousey’s pop up behind first fell in for an RBI single and with two out, Brown smacked a two run single for a 6-1 Pella lead.

The final run of the game was scored by Pella in the bottom of the sixth when Katie Pollock reached on an error and came around to score on a double by Riggen.

Riggen led the Lady Dutch with a pair of doubles and a single while Corbin cracked a double and a single and Tousey popped a pair of base hits.

New Pella coach, Katie Gravert, was very pleased to pick up her first win at the Pella helm.

“I’m very happy to get that first win,” Gravert said. “The kids played well and we had only one error. I have been here as an assistant for seven years, so I know what we will deal with. We are excited and ready to compete in the Little Hawkeye Conference.”
