Pella head coach Mallory Peterson talks to her team in a match last year

PELLA — The opening night of Little Hawkeye Conference volleyball in Pella was just a preview of things to come in one of the most competitive leagues in Iowa. The No. 9 in Class 4A Lady Dutch hosted the No. 10 Indians from Indianola and there was certainly a tournament atmosphere in the Dutch arena.

The two combatants went at it toe to toe and nose to nose for four games before the Indians took advantage of some untimely Pella errors to post a 3-1 match victory.

Game one was an intense back and forth affair with the Lady Dutch breaking away from a 21-21 deadlock to post a 25-23 win. In that final surge, it was kills by Avey Amelse, Bailey Van Voorst and Meredith Rowe along with a block by Ella Corbin that sealed the deal.

In each of the next three games the girls in green were poised to strike the lethal blow only to have crucial errors snatch victory away from them.

In game two, Pella had rallied from a 22-17 deficit to draw to within one at 22-21. Then a hitting error gave the ball back to the Indians. A Pella passing error and a smash by Macy Wente tied the match at one game each.

Game three followed the same pattern and the Dutch were on the verge of victory with a 22-21 lead. Then a communication problem gave the Indians a point and the ball. A hitting error and a net serve off set a kill by Corbin to give Indianola a 25-23 win.

Now the Lady Dutch had their backs firmly planted against the wall and when the Indians opened up a 10-4 lead things did not look good. The resilient Pella team fought back to close the margin to 21-19. But then it happened again. A kill by Dana Blake followed by three Pella hitting errors put the finishing touches on a three games to one Indianola victory.

“Too many untimely errors,” lamented Pella Coach Mallory Peterson. “Our errors at critical times in games killed rallies and allowed a very good Indianola team to post an important LHC victory. Our focus going forward will be on cutting down on the number of errors. It doesn’t get any easier as No. 15 Norwalk comes in next Tuesday.”
