Pella's Anna Vander Waal (24) and Reagan Van Wyk (4) take the floor in a game earlier this season.

PELLA — The Grinnell Lady Tigers live and die by the three-point shot and Tuesday night in Pella they were very much alive. The high octane Tigers launched 13 triples and the Dutch could not overcome that barrage in a 78-60 Little Hawkeye Conference loss.

The girls in green and white gave a good account of themselves in the first half as they trailed by only four at the break. But the Tigers rained in seven shots from behind the arc in the third stanza to take control of the game.

Pella drew first blood with a three ball and a baseline drive by Faith Diers for a 5-3 lead, but Grinnell quickly regained the lead. Another shot on the baseline by Diers and a long ball by Anna Vander Waal tied the score at 10-10, but the Tigers closed the quarter out with a 15-10 lead.

Madison Naig opened the second period with a three and Annika Peterson and Diers followed with drives to the bucket for a 17-15 Pella lead. The Tigers didn’t blink as they went back to business and regained the lead for good. The Dutch stayed close for the rest of the first half, but they would not see the top of the leader board again for the rest of the game.

The Tigers came out of intermission with a 30-26 lead and they wasted no time in extending the lead to 38-26 with triples by Ivy Schmidt and Haidyn Hull. Grinnell stunned the Lady Dutch with five consecutive treys, three of them by Hull, to take a comfortable 54-38 lead into the final frame.

Pella tried to make a run with a 22-point fourth quarter, but the bad news was that the Grinnell scored 24. Naig drained 10 points in the final period and Vander Waal and Kylie Tauke notched threes, but it was not enough to overtake the hot shooting Tigers.

Naig led the Lady Dutch scoring with 17 points and Vander Waal and Diers were also in double digits with 15 and 13 points respectively. Reagan Van Wyk and Jasmine Namminga shared rebound lead as they each grabbed six caroms off the glass. Schmidt and Hull were double trouble for Pella as the Tiger tandem each scored 21 points.

The Lady Dutch are 10-10 overall and 6-7 in LHC play. They will complete conference play Thursday night when they host Pella Christian in an intercity rumble.
