Who: Pella Christian (0-1) vs No. 1 (2A) PCM (1-0)
When: Friday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Pella Christian holds a 7-5 advantage since 2008. The Eagles won six straight from 2012-17 but PCM has won in each of the past two years.
One key player for Pella Christian
It’s going to be another big week for Luke Mulder. This may be a game that is won in the trenches after PCM ran for 305 yards on 42 carries (7.3 yards per carry) last week. If they have that kind of success on the ground again, it could be a long night for the Eagles. Mulder was third on the team against Des Moines Christian with 4.5 tackles to go along with two sacks. He will need to be a force on the defensive line and close up holes that the Mustang running backs got last week.
Keys for Pella Christian
As previously mentioned, slowing down the PCM running game will be the top priority. Pella Christian did a lot of good things last week but a couple of key mistakes added up on them. Trying to limit those mistakes and making the play in the big moment will need to happen to knock off the top-ranked team in 2A. Sophomore quarterback Isaac Kacmarynski got his feet wet last week in his first start and will look to build off of that this week. His success may be determined on how the battle of the trenches is going as PCM as some big bodies that may pose a challenge to PC on both sides of the ball. It will be the home opener for the Eagles as they will try to pull off the upset and gain some momentum heading into district play.
