Who: No. 6 (1A) Pella Christian (2-0) vs No. 9 (2A) PCM (1-1)
Where: PCM Stadium in Monroe
When: Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
Pella Christian leads the series 7-6 since 2008 but PCM has won the last three meetings in each of the past three years with two being blowouts. The Eagles fell 42-7 as quarterback Isaac Kacmarynski was held to 12-of-28 for 66 yards and one touchdown while the PC running game was shutdown to just 13 yards. Luke Mulder had a huge game defensively with 11 tackles (three for loss) and one sack.
One key player for Pella Christian
The Eagles would certainly like to establish a run game after being held to just 13 yards in last year’s matchup. Sophomore running back Benny Schirz has run for 143 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns through two weeks. Getting him going would go a long way to opening up the passing and scrambling game for Kacmarynski.
Keys for Pella Christian
PCM is a team that has had a lot of success in recent years including a trip to the 2A state semifinals a year ago. But the Mustangs have been slow out of the gate this year with a two-touchdown win over Davis County before falling in a low-scoring game to Newton. Meanwhile Pella Christian has been off to a very hot start with huge wins over Des Moines Christian and Panorama. The Eagles will try to keep that momentum going at a tough place to play against a team they’ve struggled with recently. Turnovers may be key in this one as PC has forced 10 while PCM has forced three in the first two weeks. But if PC continues to do what they’ve done the first two weeks on both sides of the ball, they will wrap up non-district play 3-0 and potentially continue to climb the rankings.
