CENTERVILLE — The district title was on the line on Saturday in Centerville where the Big Reds got off to a quick start and held off a late rally from Pella Christian to end the Eagles’ season with an 8-4 loss.
Centerville started with one run in the first but would explode with six more runs in the second inning behind seven hard hits to balloon the lead to 7-0 after two.
Pella Christian would get one of those runs back in the third inning as Corbin Westerkamp’s one-out triple down the first base line would set up an RBI sacrifice fly by Bennett Spronk.
The Eagles didn’t have much luck with the bats from there as they trailed 8-1 entering the seventh inning with their season on the line.
PC would not go down quietly as Micah DeHaan would plate a pair of runs with his two-RBI single with two outs. The Eagles would then bring in DeHaan on a Big Red error with another runner in scoring position for Spronk. Spronk would get good contact but Centerville’s Brady Kauzlarich was able to chase it down in center to end the rally and the game.
Westerkamp was 2-for-4 with a double for PC while DeHaan had two RBIs and Spronk had one. Lincoln Vander Molen took the loss for the Eagles in 1 1/3 innings of work on the mound. Trevor Veenstra and DeHaan both pitched in relief.
Pella Christian finishes the season with an 11-22 record and will graduate just one senior in Kyle Branderhorst.
