Pella Christian's Eric Mulder finished with 11 points against EBF

EDDYVILLE — Two pretty good Class 2A basketball teams met on the hardwood at EBF High School Tuesday night. And though the game was not played to perfection, the intensity was on display. The Eagles used the strength of their inside towers to send a message. The message was that they are ready to compete for the big prize.

The Rockets played toe to toe with the rangy Eagles in the first three minutes and took a 6-5 lead as a pair of inside buckets by Ethan Davis and a pair of free throw by Brooks Moore offset baseline shots by PC’s Levi Schelhaas and Niko Schirz and a free throw by Jaedon Huisman.

In the next four minutes the Eagles used a 13-0 run to take an 18-6 lead and they never looked back. That run featured a pair of long balls from Aiden Stoltz, inside buckets from Schirz, Daniel Andringa and Eric Mulder along with a free throw from Huisman. Free throws by Davis and Moore closed out the first period with the Eagles leading 18-8.

A determined band of Rockets fought hard to keep pace in the second quarter, but the Eagles went outside and kept the Rockets at bay with the long ball. Schelhaas fired in a pair of triples and Huisman added another for the Eagles while the Rockets had three buckets and three free throws from Ethan Davis. A 15-14 PC edge in the second stanza sent the Eagles into halftime with a 33-22 lead.

The Eagles took up from where they left off in the third period with a 10-2 run to expand the lead to 43-24. Stoltz dropped in another pair of threes and Andringa and Bennett Spronk added inside baskets. The Rockets tried to respond with threes from Jesse Cornelison and Landon Glosser, but a steady Eagle attack held them off and the PC took a 50-36 lead into the final quarter.

Threes by Carson Wade and Moore were not enough as the Eagles used another three by Stoltz and 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to post a 69-50 non-conference win.

Balance was the name of the game for the Eagles as four players checked in with double figure points. Schelhaas and Stoltz lead the Pella Christian with 15 points apiece and Huisman and Mulder each added 11 points. Mulder completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Davis was the lone Rocket in double figures with 18 points while Moore was close with nine points.

“This was a good win for us and a good way to head into the holiday break,” PC Coach JD Boer said. “I liked the way that we competed on the defensive end and how we brought some pressure to force turnovers. Rebounding was a big key for us in this game and I thought we did a solid job on the glass. The offensive balance was great and we really shared the ball well.”

EBF Coach Travis Stout felt that defending the Eagles was a major task.

“You have to pick your poison,” Stout said. “You stop one and somebody else steps up. They have multiple weapons and their size creates problems. We just had too many turnovers and their defense and size caused many of those turnovers. I can’t fault the effort of our kids. They played as hard as they could. PC hit threes and they move the ball well.”

The Eagles are 6-1 and 2-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. After the break, they will host league leading DC-G on Tuesday and travel to Newton in Friday. The Rockets are 4-2 and 3-0 in the South Central Conference and will go on the road to Chariton on Tuesday after the break and then to Centerville on Friday.
