PELLA — Going against the two teams directly in front of it at the last American Rivers Conference championship meet, the Central College women’s track and field was third in a home triangular Saturday afternoon.
The University of Dubuque was first with 105.5 points and Nebraska Wesleyan University was second with 94.5. Central was third at 87 points.
“It was definitely a very competitive meet,” coach Brandon Sturman said. “Even though we got third, I thought we did a good job of competing in the events we needed to. These are the two teams we’ll be chasing at the conference meet so it gives us a good idea of where we stand and what we need to work on moving forward.
High jumper Malory Jones (sophomore, Fairfield) cleared a new personal-best mark of 5 feet, 3.75 inches to win the competition.
“She’s focusing on high jump this year and it all came together for her in week two,” Sturman said. “It’s super exciting for us because we need her to score for us in that event.”
Mari Stein (sophomore, Okoboji) and Caroline McMartin (freshman, Pella) took the top-two spots in the mile run, crossing the line in 5 minutes, 15.50 seconds and 5:16.58, respectively.
“We knew Mari would be leader in the mid-distance events,” Sturman said. “She’s proved it each week.”
Cutting another .03 seconds off her career-best time, Kiki Pingel (senior, Pella) ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.04 seconds to win the event. Mary Gray (senior, West Des Moines, Waukee HS) was second in 9.35.
“We’re super excited with how Kiki is competing right now,” Sturman said. “We’re blessed to have her and it is great to see her put it all together.”
Pingel led off a 4x400-meter relay team of Abbi Roerdink (freshman, Tiffin, Ohio, Hopewell-Loudon HS), Elsie Thoreson (freshman, Pella) and McMartin which finished second in 4:07.54
Holly Forrester (senior, Manhattan, Kan., Rock Creek HS) won the triple jump, matching her career-best leap of 36-9.75. In other field events, Kennedy Morris (senior, Earlham) was second in the weight throw (54-3.25) and Cali Coffman (sophomore, Leawood, Kan., Blue Valley HS) was tied for second in the pole vault (9-0.25).
Kasey Pelzer (freshman, Pleasantville) had new season-best marks in the 60-meter dash (8.12 seconds) and long jump (15-9.75), finishing third and fourth. Roerdink was third in the 400-meter run in 1:02.75.
Central will host Simpson College and Luther College next Saturday inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse for a triangular starting at noon.
