TEMPE, Ariz. — Making program history with its first appearance at the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships, the Central College women’s triathlon team wrapped up its fall season Saturday.

Central finished sixth in the team standings in the NCAA Division III level with 117 points. Trine University (Ind.) was the top team with 30 points. A sprint triathlon includes a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike and a five-kilometer run. The best four entries from each team compile the team score.

“Our run times were amazing,” coach Jennie Hedrick-Rozenberg said. “Our swim times were also great. Our bike times looked slower but this was our first true 20K.”

Once again, Lindsey Blommers (junior, Pella) was Central’s top finisher, clocking in at 1:18.45.7 to finish 12th.

“She did great,” Hedrick-Rozenbeg said. “It was the fastest run time she had all year.”

Thea Lunning (junior, Mason City) had the top time for the Dutch in the water (12:14) and was 28th overall in 1:26.59.8 but it was her performance on the bike that caught her coaches attention.

“She’s finally been able to practice with us on her bike after golf,” Hedrick-Rozenberg said. “She’s learning her gears and got her bike shoes. All of that over the last two weeks really pushed her to stay up there with the faster girls.”

Summer Brand (sophomore, Mount Vernon) was third across the line for Central in 37th place in 1:30.07.0. Jessica Carithers (junior, Mackinaw, Ill., Deer Creek-Mackinaw HS) finished in a time of 1:32.11.2 or 40th place.

It’s the final competition of the fall for the team. The spring schedule has not been determined yet.
