Central's Jake Dzarnowski

CEDAR RAPIDS — An early goal from senior midfielder Jake Dzarnowski (Wheaton, Ill., North HS) was enough for the Central College men’s soccer team to secure a 1-0 victory over Coe College Wednesday night.

It was the first win for the Dutch (3-9-1, 1-4-1 American Rivers Conference) since beating Carleton College (Minn.) 1-0 on September 19. The seven matches since have been marred by injuries to key players and Coach Garry Laidlaw was happy to snap the streak.

“It feels good to get this one,” he said. “We’re still fighting. We’re going to trying to scrap our way into the conference tournament. It was a massive three points tonight.”

In the 12th minute, Dzarnowski buried it into the back of the net following a Tristin Gilles (senior, forward, Hudson) corner kick.

“Jake scored off a well-worked corner that was helped by Zach Worster (senior, O’Fallon, Mo., St. Dominic HS),” Laidlaw said.

The back line for the Dutch was starting together for the first time this season Lucas Bartachek (freshman, Waukee), Joe Brown (freshman, Norwalk), Michael Handel (junior, Libertyville, Caramel Catholic HS) and Tim Shicky (freshman, Peoria, Ariz., Shattuck-St. Mary’s [Minn.]) held the Kohawks off the scoreboard in front of keeper John Foster (sophomore, Lee’s Summit, Mo., North HS). Foster made two saves.

“As a unit, they were terrific,” Laidlaw said. “I was really happy with that group tonight.”

Making his varsity debut, Chandler Hebert (sophomore, Center Point, Center Point-Urbana HS) gave a stellar performance over 55 minutes of work in the back.

“What a great performance we got from Chandler,” Laidlaw said. “He got the call up tonight due to all of our injuries and he stepped up to play some valuable minutes.”

Central hosts the University of Dubuque for Senior Day on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
