PELLA — Seven seniors were recognized before wrestling got underway as part of Senior Night in Pella. The Dutch would host Dallas Center-Grimes for a Little Hawkeye Conference dual featuring two teams with full lineups. The Mustangs would win six of the last seven matches to take the dual, 45-27.
The matches started with the big boys at 285 pounds with Kody Huisman taking on DCG’s Tucker Chambers. Huisman would counter a big double-leg takedown attempt from Chambers and charge for a takedown of his own and turn it into a first-period fall for Pella.
DCG would nab a pin at 106 to even the dual before Damion Clark’s second-period reversal led to a Pella pin at 113.
The Mustangs would grab a 5-2 win at 120 and pin at 126 to regain the lead at 15-12.
T.R. Putz would win a hard-fought match 9-5 at 132 pounds for Pella while Peyton Ritzert’s big second-period pin at 138 put the Dutch back out in front 21-15.
DCG would answer with a pin a 145 and a tough 7-4 victory at 152.
Pella had a chance to flip momentum as Gavin Norton nearly had a pin against DCG’s Lane Nelsen at 160. Nelsen would reverse the near pin for a pin of his own to put DCG ahead 30-21 with four matches to go.
Pella grabbed a much-needed pin from Ryan Van Donselaar at 170 to pull within three with three matches to go.
That set up a big match at 182 between Pella’s Ethan Milligan and DCG’s Cuin Cullen. The two went back and forth and after some scoring confusion between the referees in the third period. The match would go to sudden victory with the two tied at four. Cullen would score the victory after catching Milligan off-balance with a double leg takedown near the edge of the mat.
The Mustang win put DCG out in front 33-27 with Pella needing two falls in the final two matches to have the match decided by tiebreakers.
DCG would not give Pella that chance as they closed out the dual with a pair of pins of their own at 195 and 220.
With the loss, Pella’s dual record falls to 9-5 this season.
Pella will go to Marengo on Saturday for the Williamsburg Raider Invitational.
