MARION — The Pella Dutch wrestled in the regional duals for the first time in school history on Wednesday. No. 24 Pella would dual No. 10 Dubuque Hempstead for a chance to battle No. 8 Linn-Mar, Marion to go to the State Duals Tournament. Pella hung well but would fall to Dubuque Hempstead, 44-30.

The dual started at 152 pounds with the Mustangs winning due to an injury to Pella’s Nathan Born. The Dutch would nab wins at the next two weights with Ryan Van Donselaar (160) getting a first period pin followed by Ethan Milligan (170) winning a 10-6 decision to put Pella ahead 9-6.

Hempstead won the next three matches with two coming by falls and one by an 8-3 decision to go back in front 21-9 heading to the heavyweights.

Kody Huisman would stop the Mustang run with a first period fall over John Ostrander.

Unfortunately for Pella, the two teams alternated wins the rest of the way with Damion Clark (113) winning a 4-2 decision, Ryan Hancock (126) getting a second period fall and Peyton Ritzert (138) winning by forfeit.

Dubuque Hempstead would later lose to Linn-Mar 37-31 in the regional finals.

The Pella wrestling team regroups on Saturday at 12 p.m. for districts at Iowa City West.
