NORWALK — Little Hawkeye Conference foes clashed on gridiron on Friday in a thrilling game that saw a late Pella score push the game to overtime only for Norwalk to come out with the 34-31 victory.
The Dutch found themselves behind early thanks to three turnovers leading to 21 unanswered points from Norwalk in the opening quarter.
Pella was able put together a drive late in the second quarter with Aidan Pollock punching it in from six yards out to cut the deficit to 21-7 going into the break.
The Dutch took that momentum into the second half with an 11-play drive out of the half finishing off with a Blake Meyer 33-yard touchdown pass to Pollock to pull within eight.
Norwalk quickly gave the ball right back to Pella with a short field as the Dutch wasted little time taking advantage with Nolan Clayberg rumbling in from two yards out with the ensuing two-point conversion tying the game at 21 and capping off another 21 unanswered points.
The Warriors would retake the lead in the early portions of the fourth quarter with Norwalk quarterback Landon Hochstein finding Braedon Carlson for the 13-yard score with 11:22 left in the game.
With just 50 seconds to play, Clayberg played hero as his 15-yard rushing touchdown would tie the game once again and send it to overtime.
Pella would get the ball first but a third-down sack would force a 34-yard Luke Hardman field goal with Norwalk now having a chance to win it with a touchdown on their possession.
The connection that put the Warriors back in front in the fourth quarter found each other on the first play of their possession as Hochstein secured his fourth TD of the night by hitting Carlson again for the walk-off score.
Meyer was 5-of-13 for 84 yards a touchdown and interception in his first start under center for the Dutch. Pollock led the air attack with three catches for 48 yards and a score while also leading on the ground with 17 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Preston Rowe led the Dutch defense with 8.5 tackles while Dylan Waddell recovered a fumble.
Pella (0-1) will look to bounce back at home when they take on North Polk (1-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
