PELLA — In its third triangular of the season, the Central College women’s indoor track and field team bagged its first team championships of the season Saturday against Simpson College and Luther College.
The Dutch won 12 of the 14 events and totaled 145 points. The Norse trailed in second with 87 points and the Storm had 42.
“Winning 12 of 14 events is super exciting,” coach Brandon Sturman said. “I’m proud of how they competed today. These were two good teams that are competitive in different areas.”
Holly Forrester (senior, Manhattan, Kan., Rock Creek HS) broke a 17-year old school record in the indoor triple jump with a mark of 37 feet, 1.25 inches. She also won the long jump with a leap of 16-6.5.
“It’s super exciting for her,” Sturman said. “We’ve been working at it for awhile now. To come out today and break it by a significant amount shows the work she’s been putting in has finally paid off.”
Becoming just the second Dutch woman to break nine seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, Kiki Pingel (senior, Pella) clocked a winning time of 8.97 seconds. Mary Gray (senior, West Des Moines, Waukee HS) was second in 9.27 seconds.
“Kiki is looking great,” Sturman said. “We knew she’d be leader for us on the track and every week she goes out and proves it even more.”
Central swept the top spots in the throwing events with Kennedy Morris (senior, Earlham) winning the weight throw (56-10.25) and Abby Marr (sophomore, Riceville) winning the shot put (38-1.5).
“We go into every meet and try not to focus on marks and times but focus on competing,” Sturman said. “They both did that today and it’s a good confidence-booster.”
Sophomore Mari Stein (Okoboji) bagged wins in the 800-meter run (2:22.21) and mile run (5:13.76). Hailey Hill (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nev., West Career and Technical Academy) topped the field in the 3,000-meter run (11:08.53). Kasey Pelzer (freshman, Pleasantville) won the 60-meter dash in 8.18 seconds and Malory Jones (sophomore, Fairfield) took the high jump with a leap of 5-0.25.
Freshman Hadyn Miller (Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) won the 400-meter dash in 1:01.53, with Elsie Thoreson (freshman, Pella) and Abbi Roerdink (freshman, Tiffin, Hopewell-Loudon HS) were second in third in times of 1:03.01 and 1:04.97, respectively. The trio was joined by classmate Alyssa Mayhew (freshman, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) to win the 4x40-meter relay in 4:11.91.
Central hosts its third and final triangular next Saturday against Buena Vista University and Loras College.
